With summer quickly winding to a close, what better way to see it out than with some yummy summer treats? This probiotic peach popsicle recipe not only provide kids with the cool summer fun they crave, but with nutrition too.

And don’t worry if you keep a few for yourself, they’re just as good for adults.

Unlike traditional store-bought popsicles, these don’t have added colors, flavors and processed sugar. You probably already steer clear of the corn syrup filled, neon colored treats, but even the healthier options haunting the freezer aisle can be deceptive.

“Natural” flavors may not be so natural. Did you know that natural raspberry and vanilla flavoring often come from a beaver’s anal secretion? Yes, you did not misread that. Gross.

And since there are no real rules for what can be labelled as natural, you can’t be sure that what you’re getting is something you’re 100% OK with. The “FDA has not developed a definition for use of the term natural or its derivatives.” (source)

When you make your own popsicles, not only can you avoid the bad stuff, but you can create a treat that makes you healthier. My son absolutely loves popsicles, and I usually sneak some herbal powder in to further boost the nutrition.

Sometimes though, it’s nice to just get back to the basics and enjoy a simple yet delicious fruit and cream concoction.

This recipe features milk kefir as the secret ingredient. If you’ve ever tried your hand at fermenting your own food, then you’ve probably at least heard of kefir. I’ve bought milk kefir grains from this company before, or you can also buy a quality brand of already made and bottled kefir from your local health food store. Jess is wanting to give this brand a shot.

Milk kefir is really what gives these popsicles a probiotic boost. According to this, kefir bacteria is more potent than those found in yogurt. It can better help repopulate the good bacteria in our bodies. Health guru Jordan Rubin discusses in his book how he heavily relied on kefir to transform his health and reverse his crohns disease.

As good as kefir is for you though, it can be quite tangy. I’ve added some raw honey to this recipe to sweeten them up a bit, but you can also sub in maple syrup for a less noticeable flavor. To make these really creamy, be sure to use full fat kefir.

There’s nothing I can’t stand more than lowfat “health” food! It just ruins the taste for me, not to mention it isn’t so great for you. If you can only find lowfat kefir though, you can make it work by adding a little bit of cream.

Instructions
  1. Combine the kefir, honey and peaches in a high speed blender and process until smooth.
  2. For extra creaminess, or if you’re using lowfat kefir, add the cream and pulse just until mixed. This will only take a couple of seconds. Don’t overmix on this step or you’ll end up with butter in your popsicles!
  3. Pour the popsicle mixture into the molds of your choice and freeze until firm. I like using these BPA free silicone tubes. You can also stick with the more traditional popsicle look and use a mold like this.
