Detoxify your skin, buff away dead skin cells and discover radiant skin!

I love me a New Years Party…the twinkling lights against the night sky, your best winter outfit, a glass of sparkling champagne or juice, and family and friends surrounding you. What a wonderful way to usher in the next year of life…but what about the 1st…the day after all the fun? That poor day, too often forgotten because of last night’s party. No shimmer, sparkles, or cheer…just a flower parade and the first day of your New Year’s Resolution.

Well, now there is a reason to love the 1st of January…detoxing. No, not a cleanse or fast or anything that will make you test your willpower, but a lovely skin detox! You can transport yourself to a mini spa day and detox your way into a calm and peaceful New Year. Start by putting on your favorite tunes, dimming the lights, and steaming your face for 10 minutes. Next, lather on this oh so lovely detox mask, and r-e-l-a-x. Your New Year’s day will have never been so good.

This DIY Detox Mask is easily mixed up in a few minutes. It’s skin loving ingredients will sooth, detoxify, and moisturize that dehydrated winter skin.

The mask is very effective and one of my favorites to use for a quick skin pick me up. The combination of lactic acid from the yogurt and texture of the charcoal and turmeric gently buff off the dead skin cells to leave glowing skin. The turmeric also lightens dark spots and scaring as well as reduces acne because of its antibacterial properties. The yogurt helps fight free radicals and smooth fine lines.

Used weekly this mask is a great addition to an anti-aging skin care routine. This DIY detox face mask is not drying, like some masks, as it uses gentle ingredients and the yogurt is quite moisturizing.

A Bit More On The Ingredients:

Activated Charcoal: This black powder is the powerhouse of the recipe because of its super absorbing properties…it can absorb hundreds of times its weight and is used in the medical field for overdoses and poisonings. It actually draws toxins out through the skin, which is great for anyone but especially acne prone skin. The impurities it draws out are then quickly trapped inside the compound and washed away when rinsed off. It is also mildly abrasive so when I am rinsing the mask off I gently rub in a circular motion to get a gentle exfoliation. (You can find activated charcoal in capsule form here)

Turmeric: High in antioxidants and anti-inflammatories, this spice has been used for thousands of years as a beauty treatment. It is anti-aging, skin lightening, and soothing. The antioxidants are great for smoothing fine lines and wrinkles plus the anti-inflammatories calm redness and irritations. Another bonus is it’s also antibacterial, which is great for breakouts.

Whole Milk Yogurt: Brightening, soothing, and moisturizing this vitamin packed food is awesome for skin. The lactic acid in yogurt is mildly exfoliating and also brightens and plumps the skin. Plus, the calcium heals dry skin and promotes skin renewal. Also, yogurt is full of B vitamins which are great for acne and fine lines.

Witch hazel: Removes excess oil, dirt, and grime while soothing and moisturizing skin. It also works great at smoothing fine lines because of its skin plumping effects. (This is the witch hazel we have in our skincare toolbox).

Ingredients
Instructions
  1. Combine the yogurt, charcoal, and turmeric and blend until smooth
  2. Add the witch hazel slowly, you may need more or less than called for to get the right consistency
  3. Apply to a clean face with a brush or your fingers
  4. Let it sit on your skin until it has just become dry, about 20 minutes. Be careful to not let it sit on your skin too long after it has dried as it can draw the moisture out of your skin and leave you with dry skin.
  5. Wash off with warm water, lightly scrubbing in a circular motion for gentle exfoliation. Finish with a light spritz of DIY Vitamin C Serum and your favorite face oil.

Use this mask once or twice weekly to get the most anti-aging or anti-acne benefit.

However, the detoxifying effects happen with just one use because the charcoal is so strong.

At home facials are a great way to relax, reduce stress, and beautify. I always like to steam my face before hand (either in the shower or over a pot of hot water) to boost the detox process. This opens your pores and preps them for the nutrients the masks will supply. You can see from the photos that the mask is a deep night black in color. Fear not! It will wash down the drain with the smallest splash of water without staining (plus you will look pretty rad when it’s on).

  4. Hi!
I’m really loving your website! I just want to know, are your recipes safe for cancer patients? Do you know what (if any) of the ingredients you commonly use are not suggested for them? My best friend is getting treatment for cancer and she can’t use chemicals on her skin so I was thinking of making her some. She’s 23 and I know she’d like to be able to use some beauty products again.
Any word in this? Thank you!

    1. Hi Marinana! First, I’m so sorry to hear about your young friend. I am happy that you are working to help her.

Yes, our recipes are very ‘clean’ and healthy for skin, for sure. In fact, I have many cancer patients who order from my skincare shop &/or use my DIY recipes with success. You and your friend should check out this article on our site, Skincare Treatments During Cancer. Please feel free to chat with me about any other questions…and I am sending your friend healthy healing vibes. <3

      1. Thank you for the quick response!
I will for sure cook up some skincare products for her (and for myself!). I’m happy to have found your website.
        Thank you for the help!
