I absolutely love driving through the country this time of year.
Around every corner there is a “You Pick” sign encouraging travelers to hop off the main interstate and head down a dirt road to a field to get back in touch with nature.
While I grow strawberries in my own garden, I try to visit a “You Pick” operation at least once a growing season to support the family that has put in time and energy and to try something new.
Last summer, I visited a local black raspberry patch and had a great morning picking beautiful and tasty berries with the grower and his nephew.
After munching on many of the berries on their own, I made a black raspberry sweet corn ice cream for the Fourth of July. The ice cream, featuring the major summer flavor powerhouses, was a huge hit.
The milk from the sweet corn adds a creamy sweetness while the black raspberries bring in a little tartness and texture.
