Anti-Aging Night Cream Recipe

Iam not that old, but I’d still like to get a head start on fighting aging, especially when it comes to my face. What you eat plays a big role in skin health, but you can also use healthy skincare products to help (like Scratch Mommy Founder Jess’s Pronounce Skincare line products). Fight wrinkles and promote youthful, smooth skin at any age with this anti-aging night cream recipe.

There are so many choices when it comes to lotion ingredients (like various butter choices and carrier oil choices).

I use a light floral hydrosol and essential oil in my favorite rose lotion, but I wanted to create a DIY lotion recipe that was customized to be used as a night cream. This anti-aging night cream recipe uses ingredients that have been shown to reduce and prevent the appearance of wrinkles and aging skin.

Rosehip Seed Carrier Oil

Rosehip seed carrier oil is one that’s been sitting in my fridge for a bit, but I haven’t had a reason to break open the bottle yet. This oil is recommended for dry or mature skin, even though it’s also considered a “dry” or very fast absorbing oil. It’s also gentle enough to use undiluted on skin. If you’re dealing with really greasy, acne prone skin though, rosehip seed oil isn’t the best choice.

The Best Essential Oils

I’ve also included a few essential oils in this blend since many of them are simply amazing for skincare. I use them in almost everything, including my honey face wash. In that recipe I detail how to customize the blend of essential oils based on your exact skin type. Jess also uses several different organic essential oils in her Pronounce Skincare line. You can find plenty of recipes with them here on Pronounce, as well as her sister blog Scratch Mommy. We’re all a little bit oily over here. 😉

Make sure you check out Jess’s Face Wash recipe using soap so gentle, clean, yet effective you can use to clean your bathroom.

Geranium Essential Oil

Organic geranium essential oil is my first choice for this lotion, since it does such a great job at balancing the oil/dryness of skin. It also helps regenerate damaged cells. Since your faces is constantly exposed to sunlight and elements, its cells need extra love and attention in our skincare.

Carrot Seed Essential Oil

Carrot seed essential oil is also good for aging skin, as it’s believed to remove wrinkles and rejuvenate the skin.

If you are looking for something not in lotion form for your face that utilizes carrot seed oil, check out Jess’s rejuvenating Pronounce Skincare Face Serum. It provides a very healthy dose of carrot seed oil, in a handy roll-on bottle!

Lemon Essential Oil

I’ve also used organic lemon essential oil for its ability to help even skin tone and reduce the appearance of dark spots. There is a caveat here though. Since we’re using lemon in this anti-aging cream recipe, which is phototoxic, I like to apply it at night to be extra safe. The lemon in this DIY anti-aging night cream recipe is diluted to a 1% concentration. That is half of what experts consider to put you at risk for skin damage, so there’s a very wide safety net here. This ensures maximum effectiveness with minimal chance of irritation. You can read more about using phototoxic essential oils safely here.

Fight Those Free Radicals

Vitamin E oil is the other key player in the mix. It’s an essential nutrient for the body, but we often don’t get enough of it. This is an antioxidant that fights free radical damage that can lead to cancer. Obviously, this makes it perfect in an anti-aging night cream recipe. It’s also worth noting, that there’s a benefit to applying it at night…

“Much of a topically applied dose of vitamin E alone will be destroyed in the skin following exposure to UV light.” (source)

Getting A Feel For Your Anti-Aging Night Cream

This lotion feels slightly thick going on because of the cocoa butter and sweet almond oil. That said, it sinks into skin very nicely after a few minutes, leaving your skin super soft! The rosehip seed oil is a “dry’ oil, so it really helps the product to absorb quickly. You can also use evening primrose oil if you’d like. It’s also very good for promoting youthful looking skin.

DIY Anti-Aging Night Cream (1 cup)

Supplies/Ingredients

Make Anti-Aging Night Cream

  • Add the cocoa butter, beeswax, rosehip seed or evening primrose oil, and sweet almond oil to a medium sized glass bowl. Place the glass bowl on top of a saucepan half full of water on the stove to make a double boiler.
  • Turn the stove on to medium high and stir the oil mixture occasionally until everything is melted and combined.
  • Remove the glass bowl from the heat and add the vitamin E and essential oils, stirring gently to combine.
  • Pour the liquid oil and butter mixture into your blender or stand mixer bowl. I find that using a blender helps keep the oil from separating much better than a mixer.
  • Place the oil in the fridge for about 10 minutes, or until creamy looking, but not solid.
  • Start your blender, or use the stand mixer with the whisk attachment and slooowly drizzle the water or hydrosol in while it’s running on high. Continue mixing/blending until it’s a thick lotion.
  • Store in a super clean glass jar and apply to the face, preferably at night.

*Tablespoon & teaspoon measurements are approximate, but close. We reeeeeeally prefer using a scale for measuring recipes like this.

Notes

Always source organic &/or wild harvested essential oils that come from sustainably sourced &/or fair trade plants. Among a few other companies, we do really love Plant Therapy, as well as Mountain Rose Herbs essential oils.

  1. How would you recommend thinning this to make a day time cream? I’m considering making my mom the sunscreen or maybe the cream foundation for her because she likes to have a little sunscreen in her moisturizer.

    1. Hi Kelsey! I’m sorry I’m just now getting to this comment. Did it great creamy? If you followed the recipe exactly with the same ingredients perhaps it just needed a bit more time to set up. Let me know if you still need help. 🙂

  2. Hi Jess. I love this recipe. Can I replace the lemon oil? I have extremely dry, mature, sagging skin. Just worried, that the lemon oil, will be drying.

    1. Hi Anne! We chose to use lemon essential oil specifically to help reduce the appearance of dark spots and its ability to even skin tone. Although, if you are concerned with using the lemon oil and you wish to leave it out that is quite alright. Hope this helps you! Happy DIYing 🙂

  3. Yikes! Not sure what i’m doing wrong, but i dont get 1 cup out of this anti aging night crem, even when blended, which is another issue as its hard to blend with only 1/2 cup. I’m not wasting my two trial runs, but really wonder what i’m doing wrong to where i’m not getting one cup out of it. (Using the exact written ingredients – 3 T swt almd oil, 1T rosehipseed oil, 5g beeswax, 5g cocoa, 1/4tsp E oil, 42 EO drops and 1/4 c. Herb water. Only averages out to about 9-10 Tbl, and there are 16 Tbl in a cup) Am i forgetting something?

    1. Hi Kell. Great questions! What are you using to combine the water with the other ingredients? I would suggest a high powered blender or even an immersion hand blender. When I do the math we have 64 grams of oils, butter, and wax. That’s about 1/2 a cup. Then, you add 1/2 cup of water or hydrosol. You should be getting about 1 cup of finished product. Are you using a scale to measure? I always prefer using a scale for exact measurements, so that might make a difference for you. Let me know your thoughts and how else I can help.

  4. Great recipe for mature dry skin! Question: your recipe calls for 5 grams of cocoa chips—or 2 1/2 (blank). 2 1/2 what? Tablespoons?

Thank you so much—I love the whole freedom of creating my own creams— it wonderfully empowering not to be captive to the giant beauty corporations!!! Bee

    1. Oh my goodness! Thanks for pointing that out to us. We will get that updated in the recipe. The 5 grams of cocoa butter will actually convert to 1/2 tablespoon. Hope that helps you!

  5. Hi, I don’t have rosehip oil but I have it in the essential oil signature, how could I use it like that?
By the way, does this cream help to remove sun spots and age spots?

    1. Hi Teresa! In this recipe we suggest using the rosehip seed carrier oil. This carrier oil is recommended to use for dry, mature skin. The rosehip essential oil does not have the same properties as the carrier oil. Does this help you? And yes, this recipe is great for sun spots and age spots! Happy DIYing 😊

    1. Hi Laurie. Great question! With any natural lotion or cream that doesn’t contain preservatives (this only contains vitamin e, which helps with oxidation, but isn’t a true preservative) you will definitely have a shorter shelf-life. You’ll want to use this up within 3 months. Make sure you use clean hands for application, and keep it stored in a dark and cool place. You can even store this in the fridge for longer shelf-life (and it feels so nice during application)! If at any time it smells ‘off’ I would ditch it and whip up a new bath. You can always make a smaller batch if you have concerns about longevity. Happy DIYing!

  6. I made this for my mom for Mother’s Day. She has always been an advit “NameBrand” user of skin care products. After using this, she literally told the lady that she would not be buying any more night cream because “this is just so much better!” I can not wait to make her more skin care products. Thank you!

        1. Hi there! Unfortunately, we do not sell this specific recipe. We do sell an incredible face moisturizer (linked here) in our shop. It is packed full of yummy ingredients like carrot seed oil, sea buckthorn oil, and aloe vera! I hope this has helped you, Sepideh! 😊

  7. I’m so glad I found your recipe. I have a quick question. We’re trying to replace my husband’s fake carrot-oil hair cream/lotion with something more natural. Could this face lotion be used for his hair (in addition he uses coconut oil) if so, could we remove the geranium and lemon essential oil? For some reason (that I can’t explain) he’s obsessed with only using carrot oil on top of his coconut oil and instead just add more carrot essential oil to the recipe. He’s looking for alotion/light cream type of product. Thanks in advance.

    1. Hi Mayelli! We’re so glad you found our recipe, too. This is an interesting question! We’ve never thought to use our cream recipes in hair. We had a customer recently tell us she uses our face moisturizer in her hair and absolutely loves it! You can leave out the geranium and lemon essential oil if you wish. We’d love for you to come back and let us know how he likes it! Happy DIYing 😊

    1. Hi Marjorie! We suggest using up this recipe within three months! Always use clean, dry hands and keep it stored in a cool, dark place. Happy DIYing 😊

  8. Where is the preservative in this recipe? If there is water in this then there should be a preservative. If no then how long will this last in the fridge?

  9. Hi Jess, I’m Erma from Indonesia. Your night cream recipe is very helpfull for me. I would like to make it for myself. Just to make sure I got the best ingredient when I make by myself. Thank you so much for sharing this formula.

    1. Hi Erma! We’re so glad you’re excited to make this recipe! Come back and let us know how it goes for you. Happy DIYing 😊
